If, like me, you watched in horror as Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, ripping up trees, turning small streams and creeks into raging, flooding rapids, you probably wondered what you could do to help. If, like me, you started buying diapers and formula and toiletries and socks and other relief items to send with aid groups, and if, like me, you donated to GoFundMes and World Central Kitchen and *still* wondered what else you could do to make a difference...Now that the worst is over, now that the power is on, and the water works, and the roads are better-- the best thing you can do is go visit. Stay here in Cedar Mountain and walk down for breakfast or lunch (or both) at the newly reopened Cedar Mountain Cafe. Go listen to live music at Canteen and buy a bottle of wine or a beer or three. Head over into Brevard and buy an armload of books at Highland Bookstore. Go to the Transylvania County Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning and get a bottle of the best balsamic vinegar.Have a heavenly meal (the chicken curry is a must-have!) at Square Root. Go to Mast General Store in Asheville and get local jams and honey and a funny kitchen dishtowel and a new pair of boots, and then go next door to Curate and eat the best tapas you'll ever have in your life.Take your money and go pour it back into a joyful, loving community of people who hate to ask for help, but who need that help right now. You're welcome here-- what're you waiting for?
