I loved everything about my three-week stay in this comfortable, well-furnished, and thoughtfully maintained cottage on the charming small farm that is Barham Gardens. Nothing fancy, but everything works here like a well-engineered machine: AC, plumbing, kitchen, bath, linens, waste disposal and a sensible layout for a short or extended stay. The hosts live in an nearby house on the property and were friendly, informative, and responsive. The location offers excellent access to fly fishing in the fabled Driftless area and reasonable access to Madison for everything a city can offer. The grounds and trails on the property are idyllic, and the rural night skies sparkle with stars. Local food opportunities abound (I cooked all my meals). Roberta gave me a great education on aronia berries and the rhubarb that was in harvest, including a hand-written recipe. Two things to consider: If you plan to telecommute, be prepared to furnish your own high-speed internet. (I used a 4G phone hotspot.) The free wifi provided is adequate only for casual browsing. Also, if mobility is a concern, note that the living quarters are accessed via a long flight of stairs shown in one of the listing's photographs. I could say so much more about what makes this place great, but suffice it to say I came to regard it as a home away from home and am already daydreaming about my return.
