Vipers Quay is a spacious, comfortable home perched on a wide bend on the River Dart. Large windows display the river scene, with Agatha Christie's elegant house, Greenway, visible on the opposite shore. Dittisham, the local village, is a short drive or long walk away. There were only four of us, but the house would easily accommodate a larger party--families or groups of friends. The kitchen is large and well-equipped. The dining and lounge areas, surrounded by those windows and an outdoor walkway, are spacious. The bedrooms are comfortable. Everything--heating, dish and clothes washers, hot water, etc.--works perfectly. The house is immaculately clean.
Vipers Quay is particularly suited for those who want to spend much of their time enjoying the house and its immediate surroundings. You can take the ferry to Dartmouth and to Greenway, across the river. Driving anywhere means experiencing what people in Devon seem to regard as roads. I found it part of the fun, particularly with the hedgerows in bloom, but be aware that those hedgerows often allow only one car to squeak by.
Staying here is particularly pleasant because the hostess is so generous and helpful. From the first inquiry through various questions we had until we arrived, she was most responsive to our questions and needs. We also much appreciated the welcoming bottle of Chianti DOCG.
So, with a nod to those pesky roads, I can't imagine that there's a better place to stay in this particular part of the world.
