The Neighborhood:
Multicultural, lively, unpolished and the place to sample the Cockney meal of pie, mash and jellied eels, Bethnal Green is also home to the charming V & A Museum of Childhood and can call Brick Lane and the bloomin' marvellous Columbia Road Flower Market local.
It’s a cool, young area with great transport links and plenty to do, just to the east of Shoreditch. New developments are being built, high street shops are arriving, and it’s quickly becoming a go-to restaurant spot due to all the excellent eateries under the railway arches – but it’s still got that authentic East End character that’s becoming harder and harder to find.
For green space Victoria Park is a short walk away, where you can enjoy the pond, do a spot of summer sunbathing, or attend one of the many festivals and events that take place here during the summer and winter. Haggerston Park is also nearby and offers a fabulous green space in the city. London Fields is one of Hackney's most popular parks. It's classified as common land due to its history as a site for grazing animals and moving them to market at Smithfield. The park's large grassy spaces are surrounded by London Plane trees. The park holds a Green Flag award - an award given annually to the best green spaces in the country.
Broadway Market is a must and provides a unique kaleidoscope of tastes and cultures. You'll find independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes and of course stalls offering amazing fresh produce, authentic street food, the most original clothing, arts and crafts in London. Also nearby are the outlet shops in Hackney Central on Chatham Place - great for a spot of shopping!
Bethnal Green has a lovely community feel, wonderful niche markets, local parks, cheap and cheerful places to eat as well as classy restaurants. If you're a bit of a foodie, look no further. Brick Lane, (which is just around the corner) has a large flea market with stalls selling antiques, clothes, bric-a-brac and all sorts of other weird and wonderful things and is famous for selling the best Indian around! Columbia Road Flower Market is also just a short walk away. That's not to mention its proximity to the Museum of Childhood and the galleries on Vyner Street. Bethnal green has the underground and National Railway and a range of buses which mean getting around London couldn't be easier!
Getting Around:
Being not far from the hubbub of Shoreditch and the City, Bethnal Green is well-connected to the rest of London via the underground and various buses, and it’s possible to walk to many locations including Shoreditch High Street (10 minutes) and Liverpool Street (20 minutes). Bethnal Green Station is served by the Central line, making travelling to Central and West London fast and easy – Oxford Circus is a 13 minute tube ride, and Notting Hill Gate takes only 21 minutes. Close to Bethnal Green Station is Cambridge Heath Station, which serves the London Overground on the Enfield and Chingford to Liverpool Street Line. It’s one of the best ways to travel further into East London, with Hackney Downs just a 5 minute journey away.
