Beautiful house, inside and out, including a fascinating original kitchen, beautiful garden and surroundings, but....
...seriously lacking in the basic home comforts expected for this price.
Arriving in the evening, and delayed an hour at the car rental desk, we arrived in the village in the dark. It turned out we'd been given two wrong phone numbers so it's lucky we had email facility or we actually may not have ever found it, let alone been met with the keys!
No welcome pack of any sort, not a morsel of bread and cheese or cheap bottle of wine as so often is left to welcome you in a self-catering property. Thankfully we had bought a slice of pizza at the airport so it was cold pizza and tap water for dinner the first night.
Beautiful beds but made of metal so they clanged every time you turned over...and mattresses like concrete! A firm mattress is one thing but this was something else entirely. We so needed sleep but some nights just searched for a comfortable place to lay, even curling up on the sofa. Sadly no warm blankets to help with that, just cotton throws. The blankets may have been locked up in one of the many locked units of furniture.
The ill-equipped 'modern' kitchen lacked a kettle, long glasses for long cool drinks, day-to-day kitchen knives for cutting up salad stuff etc (there was just a break knife). Was this all locked away too?! Goodness knows how a couple of families would cope there.
Temperamental gas hob and temperamental hot water for washing up (remember, no kettle to help and no dishwasher either) and who wants to struggle with washing up when on holiday?
We had asked for wifi but this had to be brought along later, along with a couple of kitchen knives.
The temperamental hot water meant it sometimes took an hour to run a vaguely warm bath, which we then topped up with pans of water boiled on the stove and carried down the corridor. One shower unit had such flimsy doors that leaked that we abandoned it and used the other. One toilet cistern wouldn't stop filling so ditto with that.
No house information folder with useful information and instructions. But there were several bins with instructions about daily recycling and rubbish (hence there was the sad sight of rubbish at the side of all the roads every day of the week).
The family tried to be helpful each time we contacted them, but we shouldn't have had to contact them daily!
A tad disappointing for a fairly expensive property.
