Local Roots: Steuben, Maine, a charming fishing village, marks the beginning of Washington County along US Coastal Route 1—a part of the beloved Downeast Maine. With its roots dating back to 1760, Steuben officially became a town on February 27, 1795. It's named after Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a German hero who played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War, helping the Colonies gain independence from Britain and form the United States.
