The Neighborhood:
The village of Stainsacre lies just to the south of Whitby, making it a good location for a cottage holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Stainsacre is home to the welcoming Windmill pub and the village is just a two-mile walk or drive into Whitby.
The coastal town of Whitby has something special and has long been popular with visitors to Yorkshire’s Coast, owing to its delightful harbour, which is surrounded by pretty houses, restaurants and fun things to do. All this splendour is overlooked by historic Whitby Abbey.
Visitors can stroll along the harbour walls, from where seals, dolphins and porpoises can be seen as little fishing boats chug by. A boat ride is highly recommended.
The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. The abbey ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town’s oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour, which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers.
The town’s maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby and the whalebone arch at the top of the West Cliff.
Getting Around:
Whitby Train Station is in the town centre and offers direct rail access to Hartlepool, Hexham, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Prudhoe, Seaham, Stockton, Sunderland and Thornaby.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway can also be enjoyed from Whitby, so you’ll be able to visit the peaceful villages of Goathland, Grosmont and Levisham, along with the market town of Pickering.
The 95 bus route can be found operating close by, providing quick and easy access to the centre of Whitby. From there, direct routes can be found operating to Guisborough, Leeds, Loftus, Malton, Middlesbrough, Pickering, Redcar, Saltburn, Scarborough and York.
